What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural healthcare discipline which focuses on the body's own ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or invasive surgical procedures. A doctor of chiropractic, also referred to as a chiropractor, focuses on the relationship between the body's structure (the spine) and function. When the integrity (or alignment) of the spine is not maintained, there is a loss or change in body function.

Most emphasis of chiropractic treatment involves identifying the weak link and restoring and improving normal function. I treat the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms. However, chiropractors have a scope of practice that is beyond just that. Doctors of chiropractic are educated, trained and licensed by the state of California. Chiropractors also promote preventative care by providing advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle.

Chriropractic CareIs chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic care is extremely safe. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are 100 times safer than over-the-counter medication and more than 20,000 times safer than spinal surgery. The chiropractic adjustment is a safe, efficient procedure which is performed nearly one million times every working day in the U.S. Chiropractic care is non-invasive. Therefore, the body's response to chiropractic care is far more predictable than its reactions to drug treatments or surgical procedures.

Why should I see a chiropractor?

The most obvious reason why people see chiropractors is to get out of pain. However, it is not the only reason for seeing a chiropractor. Many people see chiropractic care as a way to achieve and maintain better health. This is because chiropractic adjustments improve function, which in turn reduces nerve interference, allowing the body and brain to communicate better. The result is better physical performance, increased immunity to disease, and increased energy. Therefore, you can benefit from chiropractic care even when you are not in pain. Regular spinal check-ups and chiropractic adjustments will help to maintain a healthy spine and body.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is the procedure used by a doctor of chiropractic to restore normal function to the spine. This is administered by applying gentle pressure with the hands to the specific vertebra. A calculated thrust is then applied in a specific direction to restore normal movement and function. A “pop” or “cracking” sound is usually accompanied by the adjustment. This is merely gas and pressure released from the joint space and is no cause for concern.

SpineWill my adjustments hurt?

The adjustment should not be a painful experience if done by a skilled and experienced chiropractor. Dr. Yamada assesses each patient individually and customizes each treatment to ensure a gentle yet effective adjustment. Occasionally, patients may be sore or tender after their first adjustment. This is due to manipulation of the joints for the first time. A comparable experience is when you work-out or exercise for the first time after not doing so for awhile. You will usually be sore because certain muscles or joints have not been used for a while. Simply applying ice to the tender adjusted areas will help.

How long will I need treatment?

The number of treatments necessary varies from patient to patient. This is dependent on various factors such as type of condition, severity of the condition, duration of the condition, age of the patient and the individual's lifestyle (which refers to one's occupational duties or level of physical activity). Physical rehabilitation is much like the gym. You should see significant improvement at four weeks.
